Carry on Doctor
During this term, three of our Year 9 students and one Year 8 student attended a unique ‘Growing Doctor Program’ at St Mathew’s Academy in Lewisham.
The program was set up to raise the aspirations of students and increase their chances of getting into medical school. For these students in particular the day was extra special as their chosen profession is to become a doctor.
The event took place on Monday 20 February. Each student met with their own personal mentor, who were professional doctors at either Lewisham Hospital, King’s College Hospital or from a Local GP surgery. The day involved a lecture about their journey through university and what it takes to become a doctor. Our aspiring doctors also participated in the dissection of some real body parts (heart, lungs, kidneys and eyeballs).
One student claimed. “It was disgusting, but a fascinating experience”.
A future visit has been arranged for July this year when they will be expected to submit a 5,000 word essay about the kidneys.
Good luck to all those students taking part in this program: Isha Dixon, Tanya Parris, Sureka Jeyakumar and Kamisha Barrett.

Ms Booth – Head of Newton Faculty, is planning more activities for any budding medics, including a medical conference for Year 10 and Year 11 students and a medical activities day at Guy’s Hospital for Year 9 students. It was great to see such enthusiasm from our students who have signed up for the ‘Growing Doctor Program’.
“It is going to require lots of hard work and determination but I know our students will succeed”
