Leading medical researchers from Oxford University discussed their latest findings with students from Conisborough College for Business and Enterprise, Colfe’s Independent School, Sedgehill, Bonus Pastor, Prendergast-Ladywell, Addey and Stanhope, and Trinity School.

On Thursday 6 October, Conisborough College hosted ‘The Oxford Symposium’, which was held by Oxford International Biomedical Centre (OIBC)

Leading medical researchers from Oxford University discussed their latest findings with students from Conisborough College for Business and Enterprise, Colfe’s Independent School, Sedgehill, Bonus Pastor, Prendergast-Ladywell, Addey and Stanhope, and Trinity School.

The day’s programme consisted of lectures and group discussions around the human brain and is part of a programme of fostering social mobility by encouraging youngsters to interact with scientific experts.

  • Professor Heidi Johansen-Berg  – from the University of Oxford, presented the recently developed, ground breaking method of enhancing learning through brain stimulation as well as holding a lecture on ‘Remodelling the brain’ (Daily Telegraph Article)
  • Dr Anna Hoerder-Suabedissen – (Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Oxford University) held a lecture on ‘Cortical development and disease’.
  • Dr Holly Bridge – Royal Society University Research Fellow, University of Oxford, held a lecture on ‘Structure and function of the human brain with and without vision’

SAM_0417Students from each school had the opportunity to break off into groups throughout the day to discuss the lectures and then come back together to question the experts.

Mr Nicholas Langham – Deputy Headteacher at Conisborough College said: ‘We were honoured to host the event and it was fantastic to see a group of students from schools across the borough working together throughout the day. The students really challenged the lecturers with their though, questions and comments’.

OIBCOIBC is a charity that encourages debate between the young and the elderly, and that helps youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds to overcome the barriers to social mobility through improvement of their communication skills.
